Coating Options:

UV Coating

UV Coating is a liquid that’s spread over the paper like ink and cured instantly with ultraviolet light. It reflects light rays, and makes the product look shiny and lustrous. In addition, UV Coating enhances colors and accentuates graphics, making it a great choice for products with images or photography. It provides more shine and protection than Aqueous Coating, and has a surface sealant that prevents ink from seeping into the paper fibers. UV Coating has better ink holdout than uncoated stocks, and helps protect the product from water damage, fingerprints, stains, and wear and tear. You cannot write or print on products with UV Coating.

Aqueous Coating

Aqueous Coating is smooth and sheen, but is not as shiny as UV Coating. This coating offers a subtle shine and protects your products from stains and fingerprint marks. When you choose UV Coating on only the front of the 14 pt. Gloss Coated Cover (C2S) with UV, Aqueous Coating will be applied to the back. There is no guarantee that you can write on Aqueous Coating.

Matte Finish

Matte Finish is a flat, non-glossy finish with a soft, slight sheen. This writable finish provides a subtle look and has a smoother feel than uncoated stocks. Light rays striking the surface of a stock coated with this finish are dispersed rather than reflected directly back at the light source. As a result, colors appear softer. A great choice for a classic, vintage look.

Silky Finish

The silky finish is a very subtle finish (not glossy), so colors will appear muted and softer. When applied to paper, the silky finish creates a noticeable texture and a velvety feel that’s sure to impress.

Understanding Paper Types

There are as many types of paper as there are ideas. However, there are several industry standards and typical commonly accepted types.

Types of Paper and Card stocks are commonly divided into categories such as Weight, thickness, density, brightness. Then they are modified with additional materials, textures, finishes and colors, then, finally they are treated with chemical stiffeners, coatings, laminates or treatments to add various effects. The final outcome is virtually endless. (think our new money and what makes it unique)

We pride ourselves in having direct and indirect relationships with every major paper manufacturer and most of the renowned specialty paper/print suppliers in the USA and can access just about anything you might want from cheap low cost newsprint to the finest, vellums, metallic and fiber substrates currently in use in the industry. However, nothing beats buying power and we produce print products by the tons. Due to the amazing quantities of a few of these high end premium papers and stocks we can actually sell most of them for less than our competitors can sell the cheap stuff for.

Paper Trends often change based on many factors… technology, economy and equipment being the usual driving factors. With our current digital age, the vast majority of all printing is image based and sub straight materials that provide the best images are the most sought after. Of course cool and unique are very nice but usually come with a much added price tag too. So, current trends lead to using our top selling Paper and Card stock. The fact that no other paper or card stock produces better images and the fact that we have made it our least expensive price option helps a lot.

Understanding Paper Weight
Understanding paper weight can be tricky and confusing. For example: 20# vs 24# printer paper for your home printer. It really does mean what it says 20 pound paper does weigh 20# if you weight 1000 sheets of 22 x 17 paper. As does 24 pound paper weight 24 pounds. So it should be easy to understand right? NO! Actually, different countries and different industries inside our country use different sizes. The 17” x 22” is a more common USA measuring size. But, not all USA industries go by that measurement as their presses tend to be a different common size. The one will weigh twice as much as the other as it is twice its size.  and quantities of paper being weighed. Not to mention some weigh by the pound, others by the gram and others using metrics. So it gets pretty tricky when you are trying to compare one to the other. Add to that some printers mix it up on purpose to make it look better from a marketing strategy. If you are using one industry standard that weight 11” x 17” size while another industry uses 22” x 17” the one will weight twice as much since it is twice the size. So if you’re going to compare by weight. Get a clear understanding what the base line size and sheet quantity is.  We wont talk about how humidity and room temperatures can also change the weights dramatically. We will trust that they are using 50% humidity and 70 degrees F as a baseline. Need to know more… Time to search the WWW. OR call our CS team and we can try to help you sort it out.
Understanding Paper Thickness

Thicker Paper doesn’t mean stronger or even heavier. To understand that read about density. What makes paper thickness a bit tricky is the use of the word Point or points.

In type setting (font sizes there are 72 points to an inch (almost). 12 points=1 Pica 6 Pica = .97 inches

But in scientific thickness measurements there are 1000 points to an inch exactly.

It is the latter that we measure paper thickness. So if a card stock is 10point card stock (thickness) then 100 sheets is a perfect inch. If it is 16points per sheet thick then it will only take 62 sheets to make a perfect inch. So in understanding paper and card stock thickness is a very important factor to understand.

Depending on the material that we are printing on and the method of printing that we use Total Custom Solutions is able to print on a wide range of thicknesses. Our most common card stock thickness range from 10pt – 24pt. which is twice the thickness of most other print companies. Very few printing companies have equipment that can print on anything thicker than 12pt. Our go to best priced premium card stock is 14pt. or 16pt.

Understanding Paper Density
Paper density is a bit abstract to understand…. Think about perfect 4” x 4” by 12” piece of wood vs. a piece of granite the exact same size and a loaf of bread the same size. All the same size but each weight differently. In theory air doesn’t add weight. So the more air the less dense. The more fibrous an item is then the less dense the item. In Printing Density also has a huge impact on print quality. Light absorbs into less dense materials while it bounces back more on high dense smooth materials. Think about what a photo looks like printed on high gloss photo paper vs. low cost printer paper. So not only does the density of the paper effect how much it weights per a certain width of paper it also changes how good colors reflect. Smoothness of the surface is also able to get much glossy the more dense the item. A loaf of bread with no added oils or butter doesn’t reflect your image. But a piece of well-polished wood does a bit better even with no oils or finishes added to it. But stones are so dense they polish smooth to a high gloss easily as does glass. That is why if you want your colors to stand out always use a high gloss coated dense paper or card stock.  Density is the largest contributing cost factor to paper costs as the finer the materials used the better the additives the more dense and smooth the paper gets and the better your printing looks. Cheap printing companies tend to promote thicker fluffy less dense cheap paper and card stock which is one reason why their finished product doesn’t look as good as better quality printer using high end dense paper would.
Understanding Paper White / Brightness
In measuring paper white brightness there are really 3 factors to consider. One is the whiteness or how well ALL types of light reflect off of it. Then they also look at brightness and that is somewhat more accurate because it measures one specific wave of blue light and measures how well it is reflected by the paper. Another thing that is a factor is the color or shade of the actual paper. Shade is sometimes more commonly referred to as grey scale of the paper color. All of them have one thing in mind. The whiter, the brighter clearer the shades the more the true colors and better the quality of the finish printed items. Each of the three has significant impact on the finished product. Whiteness is measured by percentages so 100% is prefect white. Brightness scales and shade scales are varied and is not very standardized and gets pretty complicated to understand. One thing worthy to note: is that UV coating help increase the way light reflects off of the paper and delivers a richer finished product. But, it all matters which is why we urge all clients that want great finished printing to use our top selling print paper and card stock because it does factor all of these items. It is the reason we retain almost every client long term.
Understanding Paper vs. Card stocks

While the pre-mentioned factors all contribute to the natural difference between paper vs. card stock. For example a highly dense paper that is thick is likely to also be stiffer thus making it more suitable for card stock. But, with the use of additives and stiffening agents from glues, to starches, polymers and even china clay paper can become much more dense, rigid and stiff. Think if a high quality shipping packaging vs the card stock used on the back of a pad of legal paper. The legal paper bends and is not nearly as stiff or dense.

Most current high quality paper stocks rely on the use of starches and clay to increase density and stiffness. This is also much easier to maintain product consistency. So do not be confused just by thickness or weight in gauging if something is a good card stock. Currently there are no uniform agreed ways to measures or classify stiffness and thus card stocks do not yet have a uniformed rating system and you must rely more on the chemistry of the additives and stiffening agents than anything else. Total Custom Solutions prides itself in selecting card stocks that stay firm yet bend without cracking and which is why we have selected our 14pt c2s bright white card stock as our preferred card stock and have made sure you like it by making it also our lowest cost card stock. Our best is also our least expensive and is kept on our presses at all times to keep the cost low.

Common Texture/Finish Effects/Styles
Laid OR Linen stock – During the paper making process while the paper is being “Calendared” (squeezed between a series of rollers) the final roller is able to add a textured surface to the paper giving the illusion that it is a specialty paper. These stocks are not coated or extremely dense and do not take fine ink work well so it is best to use simple text or 1 color clip art for added embellishment.
Types of Embellishments
Depending on the use and substrate most anything can be added to a print project for a price. Common things are magnetic scan able strips, Scratch off or sniff and scratch surfaces, Reflective coatings, Sparkle or glitters or foils, Raised or puff inks, Embossing or debossing for 3d effects, and if lamination or glue dots are used then almost any thin object can be added from pressed flowers to refrigerator magnets, plastic cards or keys.  Recently we have started adding computer chips, flip out usb drives and a variety of other high tech ideas to a wide range of our print products. The possibilities are endless and Total Custom Solutions specializes in helping you get the exact results that you are looking for.
Types of Coatings

Gloss UV coating is a liquid or film that is applied to the surface of either blank paper or can be applied after printing or even both. Gloss coating adds a smooth even hard nonabsorbent surface to the paper or card stock allowing for extreme detail and clarity to the finished process. It is perfect for photographs or art work where detail images and rich colors are desired.

Matte UV coating is similar to gloss but is designed to not have a shiny finish. Image quality is still very good and makes the print more readable. Best for text, maps or can be chosen as a style preference.

Spot UV coating is adding the gloss coating in specific areas or shapes and applied more link an ink over a matte surface giving areas or designs a very classy and elegant look which actually becomes and enhances the graphic design.

Types of Lamination

Gloss OPP (oriented polypropylene) lamination provides a wide range of uses across the whole spectrum of printed products. The properties of good gloss and strength and the advantages of low cost make it suitable for all the following applications:Company report and accounts, Brochures, Catalogues, Carrier bags, Greeting cards, Book jacket covers, Magazines, Maps, Labels, Point-of-sale and Displays.

Matt OPP – This Matt finish coupled with its smooth texture offers a very high quality image to brochures and book covers. Matt finishes are also particularly suited to surfaces which need to be easily read such as wall maps, but can be prone to scuffing and should be handled with care.

Silk Lamination – This polypropylene film appears midway between gloss and matt OPP film lamination and imparts a smooth natural finish to brochures and book covers, giving excellent clarity to the underlying print. Like matt opp the surface can be prone to surface scuffing and should be handled with care.

Other Printable Substrates
We are now able to print on a wide range of other materials (sub-straights) such as vinyl’s, plastics, wood, metal, glass, fabrics and synthetics of all types. It is also possible to laminate a wide range of combinations of products and colors to create very custom print products. You are only limited by your imagination and budget. Total Custom Solutions is here to help make your ideas a reality. Let us help expand your imagination to bring your brand to a new level.
